A letter from Fukushima 1

Dear friends,

As I'm heading to Fukushima, the beautiful land of nature open up in front of my eyes. I still cannot believe that those are contaminated if I don't have a tool to "see". DG5 from CRIIRAD could find out even while I'm driving, and could see how much gamma rays are emitted from the ground. Mountains and trees express their grace and joy of Spring as always. As always? I can see the farmers are planting the rice plant on their paddy field. Usually it's such a peaceful landscape, but no more for me. I have my eyes on my side with a grate help from my friends. If I'm blind to the radiation, am I still feel that happy from the peaceful landscape? But Japanese government does urge people to stay in blind to the situation.

While I'm driving on the highway, the highest spot of radiation was about 60km from the plants. And now we are in Funabiki Town where is 45km from the plant where is quite low, less than 0.2μSv/h with the RADEX which we borrow from CRIIRAD. Yes, it is high enough from the natural value of course, but if I compare to other area of Fukushima and Northern Kanto region, I can say it is quite low. I will see tomorrow with more precise research.

Today, I and our members joined together with anti-nuclear activists, some of they are originally from Fukushima and some are from different part of Japan and have lived here for decades, then we discussed a plan for our measurement and a plan to organize some lectures with numbers of small groups each. We, Project 47, made a lecture onto 5 people today about how to measure and to record the data with RADEX1503. Their eagerness touched me and we develop the idea and the plan together for our future sake. I told them that I came here to be hated. Yes, maybe I will be. I understand that many people who are still in disaster of nuclear plant, don't want to believe it's danger, don't want to know the reality and they prefer some sweet whisper which ease their anxiety and keep them stay in same ordinary days even it's not. The sense of feeling anxiety is necessary for human beings to keep their life. If we don't have such a sense, human beings are already extinguished I believe. We don't need excess. We only need to face straight to it, and then make a provision for it, then we handle it. The decision could be, keep staying, evacuating, or migrating. Most of people are in between excess anxiety and over optimism. We don't need both. What we need is self-reliance and disobedience to make our own decision. Yes, Thierry, you are right. A person need to know how to rely onto oneself to decide his own way of living and when he does whatever according to his own decision, he will disobey to someone, or something, not all the time, but quite sometimes. And we are sure that This is the Time.

Best wishes,

Wataru
